Eclipse
Incalmo Series, Murrini Series
size: 11″ x 6″ x 6″
artist: Patrick Kerry Brown
Eclipse is a sculptural vessel made by joining two color cups. One is black on the outside and white on the inside and the second one is made from cane bundled murrini. After the cups were joined the axis of the piece was switched so that the joining is more vertical in perspective.
Incalmo is a glass process that involves constructing an object, usually a vessel, by fusing in-situ two or more glass blown elements. This process was first practiced in the Islamic world during the Middle Ages. It demands great precision as the edges of the two elements must be precisely the same in diameter.
The murrrini series means that at least part of the piece is covered with murrini a color application created in the hot glass series. After annealing the tubes of color are cut into “checkers” and then used as part of the color design of the piece.
